A quality law firm does not develop overnight. While many firms come and go, this law firm has withstood the test of time. We proudly stand as one of the longest continuously operated law firms in the State of Minnesota. Not many businesses weather more than 100 years of change let alone spend more than 70 years in the exact same location.
Our history began in 1907, the young James J. Courtney started a general practice law firm, eventually gaining wide recognition as a key figure in some of the largest legal disputes in the northwest. Joined by his brother and later his son, the Courtney family maintained the firm as a family business until the addition of Thomas W. Gruesen in 1963 when the firm became Courtney, Courtney & Gruesen.
David A. Petersen became of partner in 1969, and the firm's name changed to Courtney, Gruesen & Petersen. This new partnership marked a watershed in the firm's history. The next several years saw an ideological shift in the firm; as the law became increasingly complex, attorneys realized that specialization was the key. In the mid1970s, the firm discontinued general advocacy and instead began specializing in the areas of law that we still practice in today: personal injury, workers' compensation, social security disability, and longshore. That’s an amazing forty years of helping only injured people.
Between 1979 and 1985 James A. Sage, Michael J. Cuzzo and John E. Graves joined the firm and became named partners. These additions further solidified the firm’s reputation as the premier personal injury law firm in the region and produced decades of high quality representation for injured individuals. Michael Cuzzo went on to become a district court judge.
Gustav C. Layman and Steven T. Moe joined the firm in the early 2000’s resulting in a final corporate name change to Petersen, Sage, Graves, Layman & Moe, P.A.. Starting in approximately 2004 we began doing business as Duluth Injury Lawyersin an effort to make potential clients aware of our exclusive focus on injury cases.
While the names have changed over the years, the principles of hard work, integrity, and fairness this firm was founded on remain the same. Today, Duluth Injury Lawyerscontinues to protect the rights of injury victims one individual at a time. As our slogan says,"We help injured people. We get results."
